How do we Russians keep warm in our freezing cold winter? Vodka is not the only remedy available! Our ancestors made quite a few hot drinks that help you to warm up after a walk around the snowy streets. Here is one of them that is not very well-known outside Russia – honey sbiten. Try to make it for a cold night and feel yourself Russian!
The recipe is very simple. You need:
1. Water – 1 L
2. Apples – 3 pcs
3. Honey – 150 g (5,5 ounces)
4. Cloves – 3-4 pcs
5. Cinnamon – 1 stick
6. Thyme, or any other herb you like
7. Orange peel
Wash apples and cut them in segments. Don’t peel! Put them into a pan and add cloves, cinnamon, thyme and orange peel. Pour 1 L of water into the pan, heat to boiling, boil for 2-3 minutes and leave to cool to about 60 °С (140 °F). Add honey and stir the drink until the honey is completely dissolved.
Filter the sbiten and serve hot. Enjoy cooking, drinking, and don’t forget to share your impressions in comments!
